September 19, 2019 – Today Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin and members of the Hartford City Council announced rules that will enforce the Hartford Pregnancy Information Disclosure and Protection Ordinance. This ordinance addresses fake women’s health centers (also known as crisis pregnancy centers), which outnumber licensed family planning clinics in Connecticut. Fake women’s health centers use deceptive tactics to try to stop patients seeking genuine reproductive healthcare from accessing abortions.

“NARAL is proud to support these common-sense rules to protect women from the false and deceptive practices that we see at fake women’s health centers around the state,” said Sarah Croucher, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut. “It is unimaginable that a woman seeking an abortion will be lied to, shamed, and given medically incorrect information when she thinks she is in a real medical office. Yet that is happening on a regular basis right here in Hartford. We are proud to have worked with Mayor Bronin in crafting this reasonable solution to protect women’s health. As fundamental reproductive rights are under threat at the national level, this is an important step at the local level that underscores Hartford’s commitment to reproductive freedom for all women.  We hope the state will follow suit and protect women around Connecticut from these deceptive practices.”

Roxanne Sutocky, Director of Community Engagement for Hartford GYN Center said, “We extend our gratitude to Mayor Bronin and the City Council for responding to the needs of Hartford community members with this ordinance. For nearly 40 years, the Hartford GYN Center has served our community by providing abortion care by licensed physicians and practitioners, as well woman visits and the full range of reproductive health care, always based on accurate, trustworthy medical information. We have witnessed firsthand the dangers that fake women’s health centers pose by deceiving patients and delaying their access to time-sensitive medical care in their efforts to convince them not to have an abortion. We are proud to continue our work as a part of Connecticut’s healthcare community and we welcome the public, our elected officials, and the press for a scheduled visit to see firsthand what legitimate, comprehensive reproductive healthcare provision looks like.”

“National Institute for Reproductive Health commends the city of Hartford for taking this important step to protect women’s access to medically accurate health care and information,” said Andrea Miller, President of National Institute for Reproductive Health. “It is critical that women who are pregnant or think they might be know whether they are receiving medical care from a medical provider. This regulation will help ensure that no woman is deceived when seeking health care, including access to abortion.”
