H.B. 7070, An Act Concerning Deceptive Marketing Practices of Limited Service Pregnancy Centers was passed out of committee today by members of the Public Health Committee. This will ensure that clear and honest advertising of services will be the standard of practice in reproductive health care in the State of Connecticut. At a time when reproductive rights are under attack in Washington D.C. and around the country, we are proud that Connecticut legislators had the courage to stand up to advance reproductive freedom in Connecticut.
Several limited service pregnancy centers in Connecticut utilize deceptive marketing practices, so they appear to offer comprehensive, unbiased counseling and procedures when they in fact, do not. Abortion and emergency contraception are extremely time-sensitive, and any delay in this care may increase health risks, financial burdens and in some cases, may eliminate one’s ability to obtain these procedures altogether. This legislation is a very careful legal strategy built off of work at the ordinance level. This bill is limited in scope, does not infringe upon these center’s first amendment right to free speech, and only demands transparency and honesty when advertising reproductive health care services.
“We are excited to see Connecticut take a lead on proactive, pro-choice legislation. The pro-choice community in Connecticut would like to thank Senator Abrams, Representative Steinberg, and other supporters on the committee for their leadership and commitment to women.” said Sarah Croucher, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut. “85% of Connecticut voters are pro-choice, including over 50% of republican voters; this should not be a partisan issue. We look forward to this bill continuing on through the legislative session.”
NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut looks forward to this bill moving swiftly to debate and vote in the House.
