January 22, 2020 – On the 47th anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court ruling, NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut celebrates our state’s long history of bipartisan support to protect and expand reproductive freedom.
“At a time when we are witnessing an unprecedented number of attacks upon reproductive freedom across the country, federal, state and municipal policymakers must ensure that everyone can access care regardless of their income, age, race, zip code or immigration status,” says Liz Gustafson of NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut. “We are grateful for Congresswoman Jahana Hayes, Mayor Luke Bronin and Mayor Ben Florsheim’s commitment to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom, and look forward to working with legislative champions during the upcoming legislative session to pass proactive, pro-choice policy.”
“Roe v. Wade was a decision made 47 years ago to protect a woman’s body from government control,” says pro-choice champion Congresswoman Jahana Hayes. “There are no laws that give the government power to control a man’s body. Women deserve the same right.”
“On this 47th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we reaffirm that reproductive freedom is a human right and we need to protect and expand reproductive freedom as a legal right in our country,” says Mayor of Hartford, Luke Bronin. “In Hartford, we have been proud to stand against the anti-choice agenda that has tried to deceive women and limit women’s access to reproductive healthcare. We need to do the same thing at the state level, and at the federal level we need to enact a law that mirrors Roe v Wade so that no matter where you live, you can access the full range of reproductive healthcare.”
“I’m proud to stand with NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut today as we recognize the anniversary of Roe v. Wade and reaffirm the need to protect and expand access to reproductive healthcare,” says Mayor of Middletown, Ben Florsheim. “That means prenatal care, it means doula services, it means healthcare for young children and their families, and it means safe and legal abortion. Reproductive freedom means strong families, and strong families are what make communities like Middletown and states like Connecticut great.”
