May 26, 2021 – Today, Governor Ned Lamont signed S.B. 835– An Act Concerning Deceptive Advertising Practices of Limited Service Pregnancy Centers- into law. This bill will ensure that clear and honest advertising services will be the standard practice of all organizations who offer pregnancy-related services and reproductive health care in Connecticut.

Liz Gustafson, State Director of NARAL Pro-choice Connecticut, released the following statement: “As we witness an outright attack upon reproductive freedom across the country, Connecticut is taking a major step to protect and expand reproductive freedom. This legislation sends an important message, that people who think they are pregnant deserve and need timely access to qualified medical professionals without facing deception, barriers or shame. While we continue our fight to ensure that everyone can decide if, when or how to start or grow their families, we can look to this proactive legislation as a bold example of progress. We applaud Governor Ned Lamont for signing this legislation, and are deeply grateful for every single legislator, provider, community member, and cross-movement organization who fought so passionately, from Hartford to across the State of Connecticut, to reach this pivotal moment.”

Roxanne Sutocky, Director of Community Engagement with The Women’s Centers said: “Hartford GYN Center is proud to serve as part of Connecticut’s healthcare community. With our community partners, we are building a future where people can get an abortion when they need it, laws support each of us, and all pregnancy decisions are met with love and support. As the only independent abortion provider in the state of Connecticut, we have witnessed firsthand the dangers that false and misleading advertisements directed toward pregnant people pose. At Hartford GYN Center, we trust our patients when they tell us they are deceived and delayed while accessing time-sensitive, pregnancy-related medical care. Clear and honest advertising directed at those seeking medical care should be the standard practice here in Connecticut. We commend Governor Lamont for signing this important legislation into law.

This legislation works to fill an existing gap in current consumer protection mechanisms, and will prohibit organizations that hold themselves out as offering pregnancy-related services from advertising in Connecticut with false, misleading, or deceptive language about the services they provide.
